The small, pretty Gaithersburg Historical Park is nestled comfortably between the railway station and freight house museum. A commemorative plaque tells the story of the Schwartz family who lived in what is now the town hall. Meanwhile, Seneca Creek State Park features a beautiful peony garden and historic buildings ranging from a restored log cabin to a 19th-century grain mill. The Nature Centre offers a variety of outdoor activities for those who cannot use it, such as hiking, picnicking and bird watching.

While the goods house is open, the small community museum is located right next to the station. As the whole family explores the interactive exhibits, CSX and Amtrak can be heard rumbling past the museum. When you visit the park, you can see the steam engine parked next to it up close.

The Gaithersburg Community Museum interprets the site and organizes special educational events, including star-watching and other astronomical events (more information on these events is available here). Nansie Wilde, the head of the community centre dedicated to keeping Gaithersburg's history alive, manages the museum's collection of over 1,000 objects and many of its exhibits (see below).

When you visit the museum, you can take your own tour with your group or take part with friends or family members.

Also in Rockville is Storyville, a unique space dedicated to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education and research. It is designed as a large part of the Children's Museum of the area and offers themed areas for children and adults. There is a large multi-storey car park nearby, so if you have children interested in space or just want a free public program to work with STEM minds, this is the place for you.

Other nearby attractions include the picturesque village of Washington Grove, which has its own museum, the National Museum of Natural History. The Smithsonian is at the top of the list of families offering free indoor fun for children. This museum actually contains a collection revered worldwide for its collection of animals, plants and other natural resources. Another nautical theme playground for children is always the carousel and play area on the Columbia Mall.
